Volunteer Emergency Response Group in Västerås
The city of Västerås has removed the personal letter from the application process. We do this to achieve a better and fairer recruitment process. When you submit your application, you will be asked to answer a number of questions that will be an important part of our selection work.
Do you want to be a support for your city and your fellow citizens when it is truly needed? With us, your job title or educational background does not matter much – the most important thing is your commitment to the community and your willingness to make a difference. Here, you get to be part of the solution and make a concrete difference in society. Apply now and help make a difference!
Your Responsibilities
Imagine that something serious happens in Västerås. It could be a major accident or another extraordinary event, such as a large water leak, a forest fire, or in the worst case, war. The concept of the Volunteer Emergency Response Group (FBG) is a contract-based local concept for coordinating volunteers and members from defense organizations at the local level. This constitutes a central part of Västerås city's voluntary reinforcement resources and is done in collaboration with the Mälardalen Rescue Service. In the event of a peacetime crisis, heightened preparedness, or ultimately war, FBG has an expanded role with several important tasks to support society.
During heightened preparedness, FBG must be ready to act as civil defense personnel, which means they can be called in to perform tasks that are critical for the functioning of society. As civil defense personnel, FBG should be able to perform the following tasks:
- Warning
- Evacuation
- Provision and preparation of shelters
- Implementation of blackout
- Rescue
- Medical care, including first aid
- Firefighting
- Marking of hazardous areas
- Decontamination and similar protective measures
- Accommodation and catering for the distressed
- Rescue assistance
- In heightened preparedness, assist with the emergency handling of deceased bodies
Members of FBG undergo regular exercises and training to ensure they are ready to act effectively, both under normal circumstances and during heightened preparedness. The tasks may vary but can include evacuations, staffing safety points, administration, or other practical tasks. FBG also typically performs assignments as safety resources in connection with the Västerås City Festival.
To become a part of the FBG group, you first undergo a mandatory basic training. After completing the training, there is an opportunity to sign a contract with the city and then participate in assignments where compensation is provided according to applicable terms. The basic training is led by Västerås city and the Mälardalen Rescue Service and also includes meeting people in crisis. The training will take place in the spring of 2025 and lasts about 3–4 weeks.
Training Dates:
- 12/3 – 18:00-21:00
- 19/3 – 18:00-21:00
- 21/3– 09:00-16:00
- 26/3– 18:00-21:30
- 28/3 – 09:00-16:00
Your Qualifications
Do you want to become a member of the Volunteer Emergency Response Group? Thank you! Our requirement is that you are subject to total defense duty. It is important that you can easily establish contact with people in difficult situations and that you meet them professionally. You have good knowledge of Västerås and its surroundings and our local conditions. It is important that you can move freely in difficult terrain during a possible assignment. Annually, you will participate in two FBG activities. Being part of the Volunteer Emergency Response Group means you have the opportunity to help during difficult events. Therefore, we believe that you are studying, working, or perhaps retired on the side. In the event of incidents, you will receive compensation for your work.
We Offer
As part of the Volunteer Emergency Response Group (FBG), you will play an important role in Västerås, where you, together with other volunteers, are ready to act in crises, peacetime challenges, or in times of utmost need. Through this contract-based concept, you will have the opportunity to help when regular resources are insufficient.
Here, you become part of something bigger! With warmth and respect, we show initiative in both big and small matters. We live our values in our interactions with each other and those we serve. Every day, all year round, we ensure that Västerås functions. Together with your approximately 11,500 colleagues throughout the city, you will have Sweden's most important job.
